Jon Batiste — Monk Movements (Vinyl LP)
Volume 3 turns from Mozart to Monk — the legendary Thelonious Monk, whose angular harmonies and idiosyncratic rhythms made him one of jazz's most distinctive voices. Batiste brings his deep roots in Black American classical music to bear on Monk's compositions, finding the hidden blues and gospel underneath the modernism. A stunning set of interpretations from an artist who has spent his whole life preparing for exactly this.

The fourth and final volume of today's Piano Series release takes a more contemplative approach to Monk's music — slower, more spacious, meditative in its unfolding. Where Monk Movements finds the propulsion and energy in the catalog, Monk Meditations finds the stillness. For the Jon Batiste Piano Series, all three volumes work beautifully together; Black Mozart is the natural starting point, but the two Monk volumes are a genuine pair. And if you're new to Judah & the Lion, the Indie Exclusive blue vinyl is a great way to start.
