Captors CD

Wolves at the Gate muscle their way to the front of the Christian post-hardcore pack with their first album, Captors.  The Ohio quintet distinguishes itself with solidly wrought melodies, engaging dynamics, and an intensely God-focused lyric approach.  The band avoids grandstanding and gimmickry by keeping its sound lean and direct; lead guitarist Jeremy Steckel deserves particular praise for his cogent, blade-keen playing.  Nick Detty's harsh vocals and Steve Cobucci's clean singing make a potent combination, underscoring the desperation and hope embedded in Slaves, Dead Man, and similar tracks.  Working both ends of the sonic spectrum, WATG shift from the pummeling balladry of Step Out of the Water to the breakneck punk furor of Amnesty without strain.  Man of Sorrows, a blood-etched account of the Crucifixion, shows the band's way with a dramatic Biblical narrative, while Awaken finds WATG offering a praise song with a warrior's manic ferocity.  Boosted by Andreas Magnussen's uncluttered production, Captors backs up its howl and bite with solid musical chops and fervent Spirit. - iTunes
