David Leonard, half of the Grammy-nominated band All Sons and Daughters, has struck out on his own and released a soul-filled pop record that should be regarded as one of the year’s best.
On The Wait, Leonard crafts songs that don’t shy away from the troubled side of a believer. These songs speak of heartache and loneliness, but they also point to the solution—Jesus. On “Wanderer,” Leonard sings “Though I wander far from You/ You find me and bring me home,” and that’s a constant theme throughout the album—a very present, very real God that is here when we are at our lowest. The star of the album is “Threads,” a soaring anthem to how God undoes the carefully constructed facades we build around ourselves.
Musically, The Wait is a far cry from what fans of All Sons & Daughters may be used to. Leonard pulls in electronic influences, along with a heavy dose of soul (remember his days as Jackson Waters’ front man) to drive home the power of God’s love for us. The Wait is a stellar solo entry for David Leonard.
